Call for Sites and Meeting Update [25th February 2021]
Thank you to everybody that attended our Extraordinary Parish Council Meeting on 24th February and to everybody who sent us emails with their views about the Call for Sites, It was wonderful to see so many residents in attendance and reiterated what a wonderful community we live in. The minutes of the meeting, which provide a summary of the items that were considered, can be found here and the graph referenced in the minutes, which shows residents views by common themes, is below. The methodology referenced by Mr Palmer can be viewed here. If any residents have any further comments to make regarding Site 28NH and the Parish Council’s response to LDC, we ask you to provide these to the Parish Council by midnight on Sunday 28th February. The comments that would be most useful are those which provide local knowledge and intelligence about the site and surrounding area and why it is deemed unsuitable for development; the Parish Council can then feed these back to LDC in our response along with the comments already received. We will publish our response in full on our website after it has been submitted.
Call for Sites Update [23rd February 2021]
The Parish Council is aware of extensive comments on social media regarding the recent 'call-for-sites' by Lewes District Council. This land has been submitted to us as part of the District Council’s Land Availability Assessment in the formation of the Local Plan. As part of this process they must assess suitability, availability and achievability. The land has been submitted automatically because it was historically considered; it may be the case that the land is both unavailable and deemed unsuitable, however the District Council has to consider it as part of the drive from central Government to ensure that 'no stone is left unturned’. We would like to reassure residents that this is the first stage of the Local Plan production and by no means a done-deal. Consultation with Land Owners will be undertaken followed by a full public consultation. We have spoken with the Managing Agent at Glynde Estates, who own the land, who has confirmed that they have not submitted this land as part of this call-for-sites. The Parish Council are aware that this is a conservation area and we have already received many comments via email which will be raised at tomorrow’s meeting. If you haven’t already, please do send us your views to parishcouncil@southheighton-pc.org.uk or attend the virtual meeting tomorrow (details on our agenda here) and rest assured that we will be representing the whole community and ensuring your views are passed on.
Call for Sites [19th February 2021]
The Chairman of South Heighton Parish Council has called an Extraordinary Meeting on 24th February 2021 to give the Council an opportunity to consider the Lewes District Council 'Call for Sites'. Lewes District Council have commenced the preparation of their next Local Plan which is timetabled for adoption by the end of 2023. As part of the early stages of the Local Plan preparation, the 'Call for Sites' is where Landowners put forward their suggestions for sites to be considered in the plan. Land put forward will not automatically make it into the plan, it will first go through a rigorous and objective assessment of capability. There will be a full public consultation on the Local Plan and the sites put forward, towards the end of the year. During the meeting on 24th February, Councillors will be asked to consider the site(s) proposed and will be asked to share their local knowledge so that officers have the factual information they need to assess each site.
The Parish of South Heighton and Norton has 1 site submitted (28NH) with a potential capacity for 70 dwellings. You can view the map and site location here along with the LDC Briefing Note.
Residents will have their opportunity to respond directly to the proposed sites later in the year. In the meantime, as your representatives, we would be happy to hear from any residents who have local knowledge or would like to express their views on the proposed site 28NH which we can take into consideration when providing our response to LDC. You can send us your views by email to parishcouncil@southheighton-pc.org.uk or you can attend our virtual meeting on 24th February and tell us your views in the public speaking session at the start of the meeting. You can find the meeting log-on details on our agenda here.

Our Christmas Tree is staying up until February [14th January 2021]
You may have noticed that our beautiful Christmas Tree is still up on the village green. The Parish Council are following in the footsteps of English Heritage and keeping the tree in place until the 2nd February - a tradition that actually dates from the 17th Century! We think we all need a bit of light in these times and hope the tree brings residents some joy during January.

The proposed plans affect everybody living in the local area and we urge all residents to respond to the survey. Alert! [3rd April 2020]
It has been brought to our attention that some residents have received a letter purporting to be from the South Heighton Resident's Association in which they are advised that they will be reported to the police for leaving their house. The Parish Council knows of no such organisation and would urge anybody who receives this letter to advise the police via 101. We strongly discourage direct action such as this which only serves to intimidate and scare residents who may be leaving their home for perfectly legitimate reasons. We do of course urge all residents to strictly adhere to the current social distancing guidelines and only go out when it is absolutely vital. If you feel you need extra help or support during this time, please contact the Lewes District Community Hub (01273 099956) who will be able to put you in touch with organisations that can offer support.
Covid-19 Update [23rd March 2020]
In line with the instructions issued by the UK Government on 23rd March 2020, the Parish Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday 24th March will be cancelled and no further meetings or non-essential Council activities, will be scheduled until we are advised otherwise. We will keep a close eye on government advice to local authorities and will provide any updates on this page and on our Facebook page.
Play Area
The government has ordered all play areas to be closed until further notice but for green spaces to remain open to facilitate daily exercise. The gate to the play area will be locked and the main play equipment will be cordoned off but the gate at the far end of the Hollow will remain open. We ask for your support and assistance in ensuring that your children do not play on the equipment until the government advice changes.

You will see these posters in the village and near the footpaths and byways that lead to Norton Farm and we ask residents to be vigilant in reporting any incidents and to always keep your dogs on a lead around sheep.
